The Northwest as a region offers an array of outdoor activities and superb sports venues. The Royal Liverpool golf club really is at the heart of the history of British golf, and welcomes members across all golfing standards. Hoylake is the oldest of all the English seaside courses. The Northwest has ample golf courses scattered across the region (check golf course search links to the right). Key hotspots can be found along the Northwest coast, including Blackpool and the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf course in Lytham St Annes. This course is the only golf course to start with a 3 par, and is one of the premier links courses in the world, host to ten Open Championships, two Ryder Cups and numerous other major tournaments including Woman's and Seniors Open Championships.
The choice of golf courses in Blackpool will amaze, including the superb Devere Blackpool Golf club, with luxurious accommodation and leisure facilities also on-site. Or try Blackpool's North Shore Golf course. Often Green fees connected to accommodation guesthouses and hotels offer special discounts for a day of golf! Watch out for the green fees sign! Cheshire is a county offering many golf course opportunities. Chester has no less than six golf course, and the Knutsford area is particularly well served for golf and Stockport has eight golf courses! One of the best leisure pursuits on offer in the Northwest is watching football. Some of the best football teams in the country are here, as is the increasingly popular National Football Museum at Preston. It is more than fitting that the National Football Museum should be located in Preston. It was Preston North End who were the first champions of the football league in 1889, and in the same season they won the FA Cup making them the first team to win the double. The museum itself, located conveniently off Junction 31 of the M6.
Take a trip to internationally renowned club Manchester United at Old Trafford. The museum on-site includes three floors crammed with exhibitions including a Trophy Room, the Legends Hall of Fame, Club History and to top it off a stadium tour where, if you must, you too can walk through the players' tunnel.
If ever there was an English football club with justification for having a museum, its got to be Liverpool FC. Like most great clubs, its had it's share of top class players, but what makes The Reds stand apart from the others is a record of trophy winning second-to-none, made all the better under the reign of Gerard Houllier, by the historic treble winning season of 2000-01, and the League Cup in 2002-3! Walking choice in the North West is diverse indeed. Take your pick from superb coastal walking at Morecambe, the Wirral and of course along the prom at Southport and Blackpool, or roam into beautiful Lancashire for some of the best walking territory in the country! Rossendale is perfect for walkers. The shape and form of the countryside is mostly rugged moor land. Valleys are deep-cut by streams and the River Irwell. Did you know that the Ribble Valley area around Stonyhurst is thought to be the inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien's 'Middle Earth', in the Lord of the Rings. 'Tolkien Trail' tours are now on offer for fans. You can see why this area might have inspired Tolkien - it's stunning moorland with striking and spectacular scenery. Wycoller Country Park near Colne in Lancashire, is noted by the Brontes in their books, is one of the most beautiful Country Parks in Lancashire. Located just north of Colne, and moving towards Haworth (link Haworth pages), the Bront? sisters referred to some of the nearby landmarks in books such as Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre. Wycoller has many footpaths leading to local beauty spots such as Bank House and Wycoller Beck. Disabled toilet facilities are on-site, and there's an information centre at the Aisled Barn, which was built in the 1630s. Parking is made easy, with two car parks, one at Trawden Road and one at Haworth Road.
Check out the stunning three tidal islands, situated in the Dee Estuary. These islands are a wildlife haven and are called Little Eye, Middle Eye and Hilbre and all are natural nature reserves, with the mudflats, sandbanks and marshes providing ample food for migratory birds. They're free to access, but you need to book in advance and get an access permit (only 50 people are allowed over at any one time).
The Northwest offers anglers a superb choice of fishing venues covering the whole range including carp fishing, fly fishing and game fishing. Many small reservoirs or lakes are prime fishing territory, for example Walverden Reservoir in Nelson, Lancashire is perfect carp fishing territory. Choose larger venues such as Mere Beck near Southport or Highfield Fisheries.
Mere Beck near Southport offers a choice of Salmon, Brown Trout, Grayling and now Blue Trout fishing. The angling site is situated near to Southport in the North West of England and within easy reach of the M6 motorway. Mere Beck is totally unique there is no other fishery in Europe let alone the UK, that has been created and crafted in a true game angling setting that replicates perfectly many aspects of fishing conditions in the wild.
Highfield Fisheries opened in July 2003 and the site has 3 lakes. Oak Lake (Carp Fishing), Ash Lake (Match Fishing) and Beech Lake (Match/Pleasure Fishing). Catches on all lakes in 2003 have been excellent with Oak Lake producing the best single fish of the year at 27lb. Highfield Fisheries is open from March 1st to December 31st excluding Christmas Day and night fishing for Carp on Oak Lake is allowed by prior booking. Highfield aims to become one of the top Carp Fisheries in Lancashire and the North West and is well on the way to becoming one.

Blackpool - still the best! - with it's stunning Victorian prom, dotted with sculptures, three piers crammed with rides, bars and shows no less, the spectacular Winter Gardens and the Grand Theatre, and of course the obligatory trip for the best views up Blackpool Tower. Blackpool has been the seaside resort of the country for many years, and it's changed with the times. Check out the superb Blackpool Pleasure Beach and of course the famous Blackpool Illuminations every autumn!
Liverpool is a superb North West city to start in if you're interested in a variety of museums. Many museums also have free entrance, so make the perfect cheap family leisure day out. The Albert Docks in Liverpool is home to many, including the Merseyside Maritime Museum, The Museum of Liverpool Life, Tate Liverpool for the best in Modern Art, Tons of cafes and restaurants, quirky exhibitions like 'Fingerprints of Elvis', and the HM Customs & Excise National Museum. The Beatles Story Museum, also on Albert Dock is one of the most popular.
Manchester certainly doesn't disappoint for museums either. Take your pick from the Imperial War Museum North, The People's History Museum, The Jewish Museum, The Museum of Science and Industry and the Pankhurst Museum, plus many more and plenty of art galleries too including the Whitworth on Oxford Road, the Lowry and the Manchester Art Gallery.
You'll find some surprise treats on the museum front outside of the main North West Cities as well. Check out the superb Gallery Oldham with Mr Knott's famous mammoth Oldham Panoram of 1879! Or the Rochdale Pioneers Museum on Toad Lane in Rochdale. And how about 'Opie's Museum of memories' on the Wigan Pier Complex, noted particularly for it's exhibition of 1980s memorabilia.
