Blackpool Morecambe Bay Southport Tourist Information Lancashire Coast UK

Discover eccentricity supreme on the Lancashire Coast - it's got character to say the least. Quite simply, you've got some of the best seaside resorts in the country here in Lancashire. Blackpool - still the best! - with it's stunning Victorian prom, dotted with sculptures, three piers crammed with rides, bars and shows no less, the spectacular Winter Gardens and the Grand Theatre, and of course the obligatory trip for the best views up Blackpool Tower. Blackpool has been the seaside resort of the country for many years, and it's changed with the times. Death defying rides on 'Pleasure Beach', a vibrant gay scene in the North Shore area, stag and hen mecca, family holiday of choice. Blackpool gets in your soul. Don't stop at Blackpool - check out the bargain hunts in Morecambe and the fantastic statue of Eric Morecambe for the obligatory picture. Eric was brought up in Morecambe and particularly enjoyed his fishing here!

The Lancashire coast is on every bird watchers' list - Morecambe is famous for bird watching, with the sand flats and salt marshes (be careful here there's quicksand!!) providing a feeding ground for wading birds and wildfowl. Check out Southport with it's 'wild' Victorian (and older) architecture and intriguing sculpture trail along the prom. Blackpool - Still the 'Best'!

'With my little stick of Blackpool Rock, along the promenade I stroll, In the ballroom I went dancing each night, No wonder every girl that danced with me, stuck to me tight''. (George Formby, 'Blackpool Rock [With My Little Stick Of], 1937)

Blackpool is brash, it's bold, it's burlesque, it's budget, it's quite simply where it's happening in the North West. Once bitten you'll be back - it pulls you in Blackpool and from many different angles depending on your preference. What's on offer if you need to be reminded - three fantastic piers crammed with rides, bars and cafes, Pleasure Beach quite simply one of the best amusement parks in the country, the legendary Tower Ballroom and Blackpool Tower, the beautiful Victorian Grand Theatre, endless sandy beaches fringed by a promenade now with 'glamorous' sculpture trail and of course the annual Blackpool Illuminations and that nightlife - live it, love it and let it get in your soul! Blackpool is still the best!

Southport & Formby - Seaside Fun, Stunning Architecture & Squirrels!!!!

The beautiful Sefton Coast, which includes the coastal towns of Formby and Southport, is one of the largest areas of undeveloped dune systems in England. It's crammed with sandy beaches, tidal estuaries, coastal marshes, pine woodlands, heath land and scrub, peat moss lands and also man-made wetlands. All this makes it prime bird-watching territory! Get hold of the excellent Free Birder's guide from Southport's Tourist Information point.

Southport is a resort and a half, with a different but equally exciting atmosphere to Blackpool. It's famous for its shops - if that's your bag! - speciality, designer and more all set in the midst of some pretty eccentric Victorian architecture. The miles of sandy beach (you'll need your binoculars to see the sea when the tides out!) is crowned by a magnificent promenade which is now dotted with sculptures which form part of the seawall display. If you get bored with running up credit card bills, why not get hold of the Southport Town Trail leaflet from the tourist info point and take in the endless list of listed buildings, dating as far back as the 1820s and inspiration for many a Paris boulevard and American city. Southport was once world renowned as a 'high class' seaside resort. Well worth taking the time to delve into it's history after you've been 'traumertized' at Pleasureland.

Morecambe Bay & Morecambe

Morecambe is one of those resorts that seems to be everything to all people. Fabulous seaside entertainment with lively pubs - Bradford women and Liverpool men come here annually to whoop it up! Great for bargain hunts on clothes, books and odds and ends of the eccentric kind (check out The Pier bookshop for the best in second hand books or Billy's bargains for that illusive George Formby CD!) Love the architecture which needs help to save it - such as the music hall favourite - the Winter Gardens and the stunning art-deco Midland Hotel goes to rack and ruin you can't blame local government as there are pressing needs in Morecambe which is a poor community subject to fluctuating seasonal work. Are you listening down there in London as the Queen unveils a statue of herself!!

Walking around Morecambe is to marvel at it's architecture - the deco front of Woolworths, the Winter Gardens King's Pavilion, old hotels some with more deco detail. All this in a seaside resort with eccentricity supreme. Clock the tea rooms, bag the bargains, take a stroll to the end of the Stone Jetty dotted with sculptures from the TERN Public Art project - get the best views across to the Lakeland hills from the end of the Jetty, and wander into the Pier pub which marks the spot where the old pier once stood - you'll get a great pint of Theakstons in here!! Morecambe is also famous for bird watching, with the sand flats and salt marshes (be careful here there's quicksand!!) providing a feeding ground for wading birds and wildfowl.
