Fleetwood, Lancashire sits just north of Blackpool and is one of the North West's lesser known gems, with the beautiful Wyre Coast and surrounding countryside. This award winning accessible park sits close to the Forest of Bowland, and is fast gaining a reputation for being one of the most accessible parks in the UK. Things to do in Fleetwood

Things to do in Fleetwood include a superb selection of attractions to please all. The beach is sandy and popular with families and for sandcastle building and Fleetwood's pier offers traditional family entertainment and amusements. Farmer Parr's Animal World just outside Fleetwood is a particularly popular family attraction in the area with animal park and also a heritage centre exploring the history of country life on the Fylde.Fleetwood's Esplanade has a Model Yachting Lake and other sights in the town include two historic lighthouses.

Fleetwood's 1930s Marine Hall sits right on the seafront Esplanade and serves as the Wyre region's premier entertainment venue. Shows, events and festivals are all hosted here including the Fleetwood June Carnival and events which form part of the Fylde Folk Festival. The hall is available for both weddings and conferences. Fleetwood is also a popular shopping destination, boosted by the Freeport Shopping Outlet which is home to a choice of women's fashion outlets including Next Clearance and Cotton Traders, Men's Fashions, restaurants and cafes, accessories and more.

Other Fleetwood attractions include the town's famous historic market with over 200 stalls and can be found on Victoria Street and Adelaide Street. The stalls are spread across three heated halls with 50 outdoor stalls.

Fleetwood Ferries and Sailing

Fleetwood Ferries operate across the Wyre Estuary to Knott End and you can pick up direct ferries to Fleetwood from Larne in Ireland via Stena Line. Fleetwood today is still an established and well used British Port and Fleetwood is often the port of choice for RO-RO traffic to and from Northern Ireland. Ferries run regularly to Larne on the Irish coast with Stena Line offering a direct ferry service.

Fleetwood's popular marina with yacht club has a 300 berth with extensive marina facilities. Small boats and pedalos can be hired from the marina, which is also home to the clubhouse of the Fleetwood Harbour Yacht Club. Windsurfing is also available here.

Thornton & Cleveleys Attractions

Thornton boasts a superb selection of attractions including little theatre and the Marsh Mill Complex with restored working windmill, a visitor and heritage centre and a fine selection of craft and gift shops and restaurants. Just north along the coast from Blackpool and easily accessible by direct historic tram, the Cleveleys Waterfront is one of the Fylde Coast's prettiest. Cleveleys Promenade is adorned with public artworks and the popular Jubilee Gardens which date from 1937 includes a children's play area, a multi-use games area and skate park alongside stunning gardens.

More attractions on the Cleveleys Promenade include the Jubilee Leisure Park complex with Vue Cinema and a choice of restaurants. Cleveleys centre offers a charming selection of local unique shops, with ample cafes and restaurants. Both Thornton and Cleveleys afford easy access into hidden gem - the Wyre Estuary Country Park. The River Wyre cuts into Morecambe Bay at Fleetwood, pushing inland to create an estuary which is rich in marine wildlife and is classified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Fleetwood Museum & Fleetwood Transport Festival

Fleetwood Museum is housed within the old Customs House dating from 1838 on Queens Terrace and digs deep into the town's history and origins from an early 19th century Lancashire new town, designed and owned by Sir Peter Hesketh. The town's fishing industry, cargo trade and ferry passenger services are all given due attention via exhibits. Fleetwood's celebrated Transport Festival, also known as Tram Sunday, takes place on the 3rd Sunday in July annually. It is widely regarded as one of the North's premier transport festivals - the only remaining electric tramway still running in the UK is here in Fleetwood and the festival spreads the length of the town's main street. Entertainment includes street organs, bands and street entertainers, trade stands, model railway exhibitions and a selection of Vintage tram rides.

Poulton-le-Fylde and the Wyre Way Walk

Poulton-Le-Fylde has a delightful cafe culture with a choice of fine restaurants and an ancient famed church - St Chad's and regular markets. The Poulton town walk is one of several routes included in the choice of walks and circular walkways are around the Wyre which also include the Stanah Circular Walk and the Wyreside Trail from the Wyreside Visitor Centre. The 46 mile Wyre Way follows the course of the River Wyre to the sea and is one of the top walks promoted during the Garstang May Walking festival alongside the Bluebell Tea Walk and Garstang Cheesy Trail!

Pilling, Great Eccleston, Singleton and the Wyre's oldest village Churchtown are just a few of the stunning villages across the Wyre countryside and can all be visited during the Wyre Way Walk. Many have regular Farmer's Markets. You can hire Trampers - 4 wheel drive wheelchairs - free from the Riverside Room on request for this walk.
