A visit to Quarry Bank Mill, surrounded by the Styal Estate, will need at least a day of your time, as there's much to see. Lots of living history going on here, with actors and actresses on hand to tell you about pauper children taken in to live on site and work in the mills.
The water-powered mill was built in 1784 by industrial magnate Samuel Greg. On site is a Beam Engine dating from the 1830s, a huge waterwheel, plus the Apprentice House built in 1788 to house pauper children Greg used to work in his mill. By 1800, the children living in the Apprentice House formed 50% of the workforce. These children came from workhouses around the country, and from local families who could not afford to keep their children. No doubt like was better at Styal than in the dreaded workhouse, but hardly surprising that Greg began to make a tidy profit on the back of this child labour. Styal Village grew up gradually around the mill, housing adult workers.
Now a National Trust owned area, of outstanding beauty indeed with the water powered mill located in a valley. Well worth spending a day here!
