Mann Manx Cat Sanctuary Douglas Tailless Cats Rescued Re-homed Manncat Isle of Man UK

South of Douglas in Santon is the wonderful self-funded Mann Cat Sanctuary which is open to the public. Here you'll discover the famous Manx Cat who mysteriously has no tail! There's two kinds, firstly 'Stumpies' which only have a small stump and secondly 'Rumpy Risers' which just have a small piece of bone or cartilage at the end of their spine. The originating theory behind this is a mutation from way back which survived on this protected island.

As you can imagine, a few folklores have evolved around this peculiarity including Noah shutting his Ark door on the Manx Cat's tail as it made a last minute dash through the ark door or apparently when the Scandinavians invaded the island in the early 9th century, they wanted to decorate their helmets with furry tails, so the mother cats bit off their kittens' tails to prevent this happening. Best stick with the mutated gene theory! www.manncat.com

About the Mann Cat Sanctuary

The Mann Cat Sanctuary is a re-homing and rehabilitation programme for rescued cats and kittens. Our Home Visit system ensures all adopted cats go to loving, secure homes. It's also a safe haven for many elderly cats who's owners have died. The Sanctuary provides a free-roaming environment where new arrivals are contained in individual units, with sheltered accommodation and access to outside, for three weeks after which they have access to all the Sanctuary's land.

The Mann Cat Sanctuary also provides a safe haven for rescued cats and kittens, and rehabilitates and re-homes them where possible. Additionally the Sanctuary takes care to promote animal welfare and raise awareness of the need for health care. Free leaflets are available from the Sanctuary. They encourage the neutering of cats to help reduce the number of unwanted pets.

The need for responsible pet ownership is paramount, and the Sanctuary promotes this. All their cats and kittens are neutered before being re-homed. The centre promotes animal welfare, especially encouraging children to be aware of how to treat animals. Why not pay a visit and learn more!

Cat Sanctuary opening and contact

The Mann Cat Sanctuary is open every Wednesday and Sunday from 2pm to 5pm and is free to enter, with free parking on-site. Why not pay a visit whilst you're on the island and support the sanctuary.

There's also a great shop on site selling all things cats. Cat heaven has been found! You can make a request stop at Stanton on the Steam Railway which starts at Douglas.
