Preston Football History & Deepdale Stadium Tours
As far back as the 16th century tactics were developed in the playing of 'Calcio' in the squares of Italian cities, pretty rough stuff this was! Before the 1880s in Britain football was largely the property of ex-public school members and the rich who had money to pursue leisure interests. The Harrow School football game was brought north originally to the mills around Blackburn by the son of a mill owner who came to work in his fathers mills. The game became popular during breaks. When the first football league was finally formed in 1888 the twelve clubs consisted of six from the North and Midlands. The first historic football clubs in this league were Accrington, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Derby, Everton, Notts County, Preston North End, Stoke, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Five of the twelve clubs heralded from Lancashire!
Preston North End football club has a history stretching back to 1863. In these early days the game of football in Preston was closely linked to cricket but by the 1880s Preston North End was competing against other big Lancashire football teams like Blackburn Rovers.
Football legends associated with Preston North End football club include the great Preston born Tom Finney who was with the club through the post-war period until his retirement in 1960. The Deepdale football stadium has been home to Preston North End since the club formed in the 19th century. A stadium tour of this historic Lancashire football club is particularly special as the Deepdale ground ranks as the oldest stadium in the world which is still in its original location.
Tours of the historic Deepdale stadium are popular, so booking in advance is essential. Find up-to-date tour dates and details via the Preston North End FC official website.
