Lancashire's capital Preston offes an impressive calander of events, festivals and entertainment venues. The city is home to the UK's sixth largest university, which gives a boast to entertainment venues and the arts particularly recently independent cinema. Preston's new revamped Riversway waterfront with leisure hub marina and new Ribble Link which connects the Lancaster Canal to the Marina is the site for the annual Riversway Festival in July. A fun packed weekend of Dragon Boat Racing, Jet Ski Displays and Fireworks are on the menu during this Preston festival which runs over a weekend. Also top of Preston's Festival calendar is the superb Caribbean Carnival end of May annually. Preston hosts an eclectic mix of events, including big Radio 1 Weekenders, across its choice of five city parks with the centrally located Avenham Park the most popular choice for events. Fifty Three Degrees Live Music Comedy Club Nights Preston

Preston's top spot for live concerts, comedy and club nights is the gleaming mecca 53 Degrees. This relatively new Preston venue has pulled in some big concert names including the Happy Mondays, Buzzcocks, Super Furry Animals and Starsailor.

Regular big clubnights are held here - the after party for Radio 1 weekenders is usually at this superb venue. Checkout the weblink for forthcoming club night events. The Stand and Deliver Comedy Club is the largest of Lancashire's comedy clubs and is held at 53 Degrees on fortnightly Fridays. Top comedy names including Dave Spikey and Alan Carr have appeared.

Preston Guild Hall & Charter Theatre

Situated in the heart of Preston City Centre, Preston's two top venues - the mammoth Guild Hall seating upto 2000 and the smaller Charter Theatre seating upto 780 host around 300 events annually.

The Guild Hall is Preston's premier concert hall and first opened in 1972. The Grand Hall was a favourite venue for stars in the 1970s and 80s, attracting the likes of Bob Hope, Elton John, the Jackson 5 and Queen. Completely renovated in the late 1990s, the Hall today plays host to an eclectic mix of pop concerts, musicals, national competitions and classical music events.

The Charter Theatre is a wonderfully modern, yet traditionally structured theatre. Two bars are on-site including the Stalls Bar and Circle Bar. Preston Playhouse Theatre

Preston's Playhouse Theatre is housed within a former Quaker Meeting House in the city centre on Market Street West. A convenient NCP car park is just opposite the theatre and is free after 7pm for theatre visitors.

Preston Festivals Events - Riversway & the Caribbean Carnival

Based at the impressive Riversay Marina the largest inland dock in Europe here in Preston, the annual July Riversway Festival offers a superb weekend of events and entertainment for all.

Festivities during Riversway (see weblink right) include Dragon Boat Racing, freestyle jet ski displays, an international food area, Firework Finale, paintballing, wall climbing and more. The Preston Docklands is fast becoming one of Preston's most popular areas with leisure, entertainment and shopping outlets all on-site. A large Odeon Cinema and choice of restaurants and pubs are here. The Lancaster Canal is now connected to the main navigable national canal network and to Preston Marina & Docklands via the new 4 mile long Ribble Link.

A highlight in Preston's superb choice of year round events is the May Caribbean Carnival. The parade starts at Avenham Park kicking off about 12 noon and pushes up around Preston city centre via Fishergate, Corporation Street and Moor Lane down via Deepdale Road and Church Street. Preston's choice of parks provide fine venues for a number of events and festivals through the year. Preston's annual Mela has been running for a number of years in Mid-June, based at one of the North West's finest Victorian parks - Avenham Park designed by Edward Milner who's work also includes Preston's Miller Park. Preston Shopping Markets & Shopping Centres

Walk down Preston city centre's historic main streets Fishergate and Friargate any day of the week and there's a bustling vibe of people. Preston's unique blend of fine modern shopping centres, independent retailers, chic boutiques and outdoor markets and shopping arcades under historic Victorian canopies sees Preston as a popular North West shopping centre.

The ornate Victorian Miller Arcade adjacent to the Harris catches the eye with its Italian terracotta facade - the design was a model of the Burlington Arcade in London. The Mall St Georges Shopping Centre is the city's central shopping hub boasting numerous top high street fashion names with easy access into it from both Friargate and Fishergate. True to its market town roots, Preston's choice of markets brings in the crowds from its traditional outdoor market underneath the 1870s Victorian Canopy near the Town Hall, open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday with a flea market on Tuesday and Thursdays. Adjacent is an indoor market with a food focus. One off markets are usually hosted at the central Flag Market including a Pot Fair (August) and Continential Market.
