At Ribchester there was once a Roman Fort, and the Ribchester roman Museum is situated above the remains of the headquarters of that Roman fort. Ribchester was a particularly strategic position for the Romans, located alongside the River Ribble many Roman roads passed through it. Check out the Ribchester Roman Museum of your journeys through the Ribble Valley.
Bremetennacum veteranorum was the name given to the Roman Fort at Ribchester which was established at the end of the 1st century AD - we're talking old here! Located at a strategic position with adjacent river, Ribchester was passed through by many a Roman road.
At the museum you can find out all out the garrison of 500 auxiliary cavalrymen who initially came from northern Spain and were based here.
The museum is absolutely crammed with treasures excavated from the Roman site locally over the last 100 years including coins, pottery, leather, woodwork and some carved stone inscriptions. There are even alters and a tombstone of a cavalry man. Exhibits explore what Roman and Celtic inhabitants may have looked like, how they lived including explorations into religious practice, domestic life and military life. For those interested in Roman history in Britain it's a must!
