The Leeds & Liverpool Canal alongside the Wigan Pier Experience
Chimney Scene near Wigan Pier
Trencherfield Mill at Wigan Pier. There's a rather good factory shop here as well! The Wigan Pier Experience - a day out indeed for all the family for all the family. This big complex is Wigan's main attraction including converted Trencherfield Mill, Opie's Museum of Memories and trips on the Waterbus - all alongside a beautiful stretch of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal (link to Yorkshire page on Leeds/Liverpool canal.
Find out about the horrendous Maypole Colliery Disaster, where a massive explosion killed 75 men and how Wigan people spent their Wakes Weeks. It really is a fascinating and informative experience.
The Wigan Pier Experience is a huge 8 _ acre site, exploring many aspects of the history of Wigan. Start in 'The Way We Were' Exhibition, no there's nothing on Babs Streisand, just lots of stories of Wigan people over the last 100 years. If you like looking at old photos and social history then this will definitely be your bag.
Move across to 'Opie's Museum of memories', a rather odd exhibition so named after Sir Robert Opie who seemed to be a collector of things. Eh by gum, there's everything here from 1960s fashions to stupid 1980s memorabilia of Lady Di and Prince Charles just in case you haven't had your fill already. Plenty of Star Wars stuff - nothing like a 1980s exhibition to make you feel old!!!
One of the best bits has to be the Water bus, taking you on a trip down the canal. Also, walk through a recreated coal mine, how strange, although more stories here of the many who worked down the pits in the Wigan area. Wigan coal was once considered the best in the country. There's an old Victorian pub, apparently there were 86 pubs in Wigan at one time!!
