The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra is Britain's second oldest with a history dating back to the 1840s. Renowned as one of the North's best venues for classical music, the present Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall dates from 1939 and is distinctly a Herbert Rowse design (Rowse is also responsible for the huge waterfront ventilation shafts and towers on Liverpool's and Birkenhead's waterfront). Parts of the Philharmonic's Hall are thought to have been based on decoration in Tutankhamen's tomb - which fits Rowse's eccentric and captivating design style. The previous venue on the site was built in 1849 but was lost to a fire in 1933.
