World Museum Liverpool

The vast World Museum Liverpool sits in the heart of the city centre near Lime Street Station beside the Walker Art Gallery. Interactive hands on family fun blends well here with an internationally renowned collection and cutting edge technology. The World Museum Liverpool specialises in archaeology, the physical and natural sciences, ethnography and has a popular in-house free planetarium.

The archaeology and ethnography exhibitions come largely from collections deposited by the Liverpool goldsmith Joseph Mayer in 1867. The collection includes many unique ancient Egyptian artefacts and Oriental decorative arts. Natural World exhibits include an aquarium, Bug House, the Clore Natural History Centre with hands-on exhibits focusing on the world of animals, plants and rocks and a Botany and Zoology collection. The World Cultures exhibit is ethnology focussed, with four main areas Africa, the Americas, Oceania and Asia. The Egyptian collection is a particular highlight.

The key attraction at this museum is the Planetarium, taking you through a brief exploration of each of the planets and moons which form part of our solar system. Find out more about why life on Earth is able to exist, what makes Jupiter look stripy, evidence of water ice just 3 metres below Mars' surface - and why spacecraft landing on Venus won't last more than an hour before being crushed by the intense pressure.

The fossil collection held by the World Museum Liverpool is one of the UK's best, and includes over 40,000 fossils. The focus of the collection is Britain, with specimens strategically and chronologically arranged, making the journey of discovery on the origins of the Earth accessible and easy to follow. A further extensive collection of Rocks and Minerals are also within this exhibit space.
