Wirral Peninsula Birkenhead Port Sunlight West Kirkby Royal Liverpool Golf Wirral Tourism UK

The Wirral Peninsula is the Merseyside region's hidden gem. A mecca for golf holidays, the Wirral boasts one of the three North West Royals at Royal Liverpool Hoylake and a host of championship golf courses across the peninsula. Stunning natural beauty on the Wirral in both the interior and on the coast particularly at West Kirby and the Hilbre Island nature reserves sits alongside stunning Victorian and Georgian architecture at Birkenhead around Hamilton Square and outstanding art at the Lady Lever Art Gallery at Port Sunlight. The historic seaside resort of New Brighton is currently seeing numerous regeneration projects which promise to boost its already superb choice of traditional seaside attractions including the Floral Hall and promenade overlooking historic Fort Perch Rock and the Lighthouse.

Birkenhead Tourist Guide

The history and growth of Birkenhead is a fascinating one, linked closely to the industrial revolution. Many of the town's early Victorian buildings and parks remain, making Birkenhead an essential visit for those interested in Britain's industrial heritage. Ornate Georgian and Victorian architecture and a host of historic industrial sites and museums await at Birkenhead.

Moving back and forth across the Mersey from Birkenhead to Liverpool couldn't be easier via the regular Mersey Ferry or by rail, bus and car via the Queensway and Mersey Tunnels. Attractions at Birkenhead include Merseyside's oldest building - the remains of Birkenhead Priory, plus the popular family attraction Spaceport which forms part of the Big Mersey Adventure. Award winning Spaceport is one of the Wirral's top family attractions taking visitors on a comprehensive journey through space. Birkenhead's renowned Cammell Laid Shipyard is given due attention via an extensive exhibit in the spectacular Wirral Museum based in the old town hall on historic Georgian Hamilton Square. The Wirral Transport Museum & Tramway is also here in Birkenhead, exploring the history of transport and the production of trams in Birkenhead. The town was at the very epicentre of the industrial revolution and innovative Victorian engineering.

New Brighton

New Brighton is very much at the centre of regeneration of the Wirral Waterfront. The historic and popular New Brighton Floral Pavilion Theatre is receiving a full makeover and plans are afoot for new hotels, improvements to the marine lake for boating and sailing and new restaurants and bars. Still very much at the centre of New Brighton's appeal is the town's historic promenade, beloved by holiday makers for decades and with a rich seaside history. Traditional seaside amusements and fun fair rides are here. Also a popular attraction in New Brighton, Fort Perch Rock is a distinctive feature on the New Brighton waterfront with nearby lighthouse.

West Kirby & the Hilbre Islands

West Kirby sits on the very western edge of the Wirral Peninsula overlooking the Dee Estuary, one of Europe's most important estuary sites for overwintering wildfowl and waders. Just off-shore sit the three stunning tidal Hilbre Islands, cut off from the mainland for 4 hours out of every 12 by the tides. Access to the three Hilbre Islands, all designated local nature reserves, is on foot and restricted to groups of 50 with permits. West Kirby's spectacular 52 acre marine lake is a mecca for watersports, particularly sailing and windsurfing which benefit from the full force of the Irish sea winds.

Port Sunlight Village & the Lady Lever Art Gallery

Port Sunlight Village, the famous 'garden village' created and founded in 1888 by William Hesketh Lever and named after his own brand of soap is a designated Conservation Area near Bebington on the Wirral. Bearing some resemblance to other villages created by Victorian businessmen and co-operators - Saltaire near Bradford and New Lanark south of Glasgow under the guiding hand of Robert Owen come to mind - Port Sunlight and a visit to the Sunlight Vision Museum is a fascinating insight into an idea which many regard as the birth of what we call today 'human resources'. Lever is also credited with enacting early ideas of a National Health Service. There were pros and cons - Lever introduced numerous welfare benefits, social clubs and a cottage hospital at Port Sunlight, and there is little doubt that workers in Port Sunlight Village enjoyed a much higher standard of living than other workers in industrial settlements of the period. At the same time workers were bound to Lever's factory.

Lever also promoted art at Port Sunlight and founded the Lady Lever Art Gallery which today holds a superb collection of 18th and 19th century British paintings and is not to be missed on the Liverpool Art Gallery Trail.

Wirral Golf Holidays

The Wirral Peninsula is a UK hotspot for golf holidays. Complimenting the North West's plethora of golf course choice elsewhere around Southport, Merseyside and England's Golf Coast, the Wirral is home to one of the three Royals in the area - Royal Liverpool Golf Club at Hoylake which hosted the Open Championships in 2006. Alongside main big four Wirral Golf Clubs - Royal Liverpool, Caldy, Heswall and Wallasey sit a host of private and municipal golf courses across the Wirral. Not only have you some of the finest golf courses close to hand on your Wirral Golf Holiday, you've also easy access to a huge choice of outstanding golf courses in the North West including Royal Birkdale, Royal Lytham St Annes and England's Golf Coast.
