Royal Liverpool Golf Club at Hoylake. One of the North West Golf Coast's Three RoyalsThe Wirral Peninsula is a UK hotspot for golf holidays. Complimenting the North West's plethora of golf course choice elsewhere around Southport, Merseyside and England's Golf Coast, the Wirral is home to one of the three Royals in the area - Royal Liverpool Golf Club at Hoylake which hosted the Open Championships in 2006.
Alongside main big four Wirral Golf Clubs - Royal Liverpool, Caldy, Heswall and Wallasey sit a host of private and municipal golf courses across the Wirral. Not only have you some of the finest golf courses close to hand on your Wirral Golf Holiday, you've also easy access to a huge choice of outstanding golf courses in the North West including Royal Birkdale, Royal Lytham St Annes and England's Golf Coast.
One of the greatest UK links courses, Royal Liverpool Golf Club is on the western tip of the Wirral coast at Hoylake and actually began life as a racecourse. Dating from 1869, Royal Livepool stands as the UK's second oldest seaside course to Westward Ho! on the Devon Coast. The first Amateur was held here at Royal Liverpool in 1885 and the club retains its strong links with the amateur game.
Just south of the picturesque West Kirby with marine lake and off shore Hilbre Island nature reserves, Caldy Golf Club packs a punch as a seaside parkland course. Views of the spectacular Welsh Mountains and Snowdonia can prove a distractive view across the Dee Estuary on clear days. A top qualifying course for the Open, Caldy Golf Club has also played co-host to the Senior Open Championships alongside Royal Liverpool. Caldy is a particular favourite for Ladies Golf with numerous Ladies Golf championships played here. The variety of the holes and the ever present sea breezes make Caldy a particular challenge. The clubhouse saw a complete renovation in 1999, and affords spectacular views across the course.
South of Caldy along the Wirral coast is another of the Peninsula's historic golf gems - Heswall Golf Club. Founded in 1902, the club was chosen by the R&A to host the Junior Open Championships in 2006. The course is gently rolling parkland and affords stunning views across the Dee Estuary to Wales. Moving to the eastern tip of the Wirral Peninsula, traditional links course Wallasey Golf Club was founded even earlier than Heswall in 1891. Wallasey is renowned for its undulating fairways and sand dunes and takes the full force of the Irish Sea winds overlooking Liverpool. Wallasey Golf Course often plays host to qualifying rounds of the Open and it was here that the Stableford system of points scoring was first developed in the game. The great Bobby Jones won the Open Championships at Hoylake in 1930 after qualifying here at Wallasey. You can see a fascinating original portrait of Jones, who is particularly special within the club, in Wallasey's clubhouse.
