The Cornerhouse Cinema, Manchester
For independent and international cinema in Manchester, The Cornerhouse on Oxford Road (opened in 1985) is the place to be. It has three cinemas, and also three floors housing galleries displaying usually contemporary art. Cornerhouse hosts a range of changing contemporary exhibitions and has an excellent film focused bookshop with printed ephemera on site and it sells copies of the definitive film mag, Sight and Sound and more.
Films on offer in the three screens range from documentary, international/foreign language films, old classics and re-releases and film shorts. Cornerhouse hosts many festivals annually, for example it's Spanish Film festival - Viva. This is the only Spanish film festival in the UK. Film critics and performers offer talks alongside film showings. The Cornerhouse really is one of the best film venues in the whole of the UK. Full programmes of monthly film showings can be obtained free in the foyer on the ground floor.
