The Museum of Science & Industry in Manchester will take you into unexpected 'worlds', for instance a walk through a reconstructed Victorian sewer! Or the replica of the world's first computer - 'The Baby', made in 1948. Manchester's industrial heritage, particularly cotton, is also on show here with demonstrations of operating looms.
The buildings where the museum is located are part of Manchester's industrial heritage. The main building was once a warehouse, built in 1880, you can see the old Great Western Railway Company's tracks. The Fibres, Fabrics and Fashion exhibition explores the world famous history of textiles in Manchester, including garments on show from as far back as 1830 plus fully operational cotton looms worked by guides who will also give you an insight into what it was like working in a cotton mill in the last century. This museum pays attention to the human stories and the details, with photographs and oral histories as well as the big picture.
Hands on fun for kids, especially the under fives 'den', is on offer in 'xperiment'. Kids can tug, pull, press and explore to their hearts content - discovering what's going on inside a 'giant eyeball', umm lovely and how a tornado is formed. There's much more to do, and exhibitions continuously change. Entrance is now FREE - so what are you waiting for. You'll have trouble packing all that this museum has on offer in one day! The Manchester Museum on Oxford Road offers a chance to visit one of the best Egyptology exhibitions in the country with many mummies on show. Here also a prized exhibitions of fossils, interactive science of the human body and zoology, as well as Roman and Greek relics. Numerous events including Egyptian face painting and a tour round the museum by Victorian gentleman Graeme Pye! There's always plenty of events and special tours going on.
In the 'Science for Life' exhibition, you can walk through a human cell magnified a million times. In the whole of the ground floor, you can discover the amazing Egyptology Daily Life and Funerary sections, and on the second floor are the Mediterranean and ROMAN displays. This museum has some spectacular pieces of pottery and art dating back centuries.
One of the lesser known Manchester museums, but really not to be missed where learning really is great fun.
