Manchester is probably one of the best cities for shopping in the country. We're not talking megabucks here either, as designer knock-down price outlets are to be had near the Lowry. Manchester town centre is packed with designer and big names stores, plus the Trafford Centre in South Manchester - ultimate 'Greek kitsch! A great shopping venue has to be Affleck's Palace on Church Street. A goldmine of second-hand and new alternative dress, jewellery, hairdressers, cafes and general bits and bobs - fantastic and all easy on the purse!

Manchester City Centre Shopping

For the best bargain / alternative shopping in Manchester get yourself to Afflecks Palace shopping arcade in the Northern Quarter, near Piccadilly Gardens, Newton Street area. This is the place to go for bright blue hair, funky second hand clothing and shoes - ranging from Victorian/Edwardian to swinging sixties and outrageous 1970s. You can spend a whole day in here, half the fun's trying stuff on. Great for quirky hats, club and street gear, records/music, aromatherapy and off-the-wall jewellery. Check out their fabo weblink below- www.afflecks-palace.co.uk

For the latest brands try Royal Exchange Shopping Centre, St Anne's Square, Manchester - Designer shopping for those feeling flush! Waterstones in this area is well worth a visit, with a huge and diverse selection of books - you'll usually find what you're looking for! They've got comfy seats as well...

Deansgate / King Street / Bridge Street - Deansgate is probably the main shopping high street in Manchester - littered also with pubs, cafes and eateries. Still a couple of huge department stores to get lost in as well.

Arndale Centre, Market Street, Manchester - high street names, food chains and specialist shopping indoors in city centre. The Printworks, Withy Grove, Manchester M4 2BS, tel: 08700 102030, www.theprintworks.com Here at the Printworks, located in an area called the Millennium quarter / Exchange Square off Corporation Street, as well as a cinema there's the Triangle Shopping Centre. This was once the old Corn Exchange. Usual high street names abound, plus cafes and the oldest pub in Manchester - The Old Wellington Inn which dates back to 1378!

The Trafford Centre

There's never been anything like it' says the brochure/website, and you can say that again. Not just 280 stores / shops here, but a 20 screen cinema, tenpin bowling, turbo bumper cars and games - plenty of kids corners etc. 'Under a sweeping glass roof' you can pop into the Selfridges food counter and order everything from sushi to egg and chips - or 'Step into the Orient!', - eating area for a 'Ma Potter's Chargrill. The main foyer is designed like a ship, why not dump the kids in 'Wonderland', and relax on the deck! Say 'hi de hi' to the Redcoats and ask them where the 'knobbly knees' competition is taking place, or just relax and review your purchases!

Full wheelchair access - all consumers welcome! Free parking.

It is located off the M60 at Junction 9 or 10. Follow your nose, as the Trafford Centre just happens to be located near Eccles Sewage Works!

Eating Out

Chinatown, located round the back of the City Art Gallery really is the best eating area in Manchester offering a choice of Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Korean cuisine. There's a supermarket as well - The Wing Yip supermarket .

Castlefield - near the Museum of Science & Industry, on the edge of the Bridgewater Canal. Here you'll find canal side bars like Dukes, and possibly one of the best restaurants in Manchester - Dimitri's serving Spanish dishes and beer -
