Trawling through the Manchester United website you may become a little disoriented! Man U fans - you can get the best mortgages, credit cards, home insurance and of course place your bets online. Or why not hook your mobile into 'Fergie on the Fone' - pleeease! From 'local works' football team to 'global empire' indeed (it now has it's own Chinese website). www.manutd.com
The team was formed in 1878 under the name 'Newton Heath LYR' (Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway). It didn't change to Manchester United until 1902 and the club floundered financially in it's first few years. The club's history pages on the website run from it's beginnings to the present - and make fascinating reading which make you think how football has indeed changed over the years. The history and legends section is really well done, with lots of focus on Sir Matt Busby and others.
You certainly get your money's worth for museum and tour (Check Manchester United's weblink for full up-to-date price lists). Three floors crammed with exhibitions including a Trophy Room, the Legends Hall of Fame, Club History and to top it off a stadium tour where, if you must, you too can walk through the players' tunnel. Kids (and no doubt adults) can also become a commentator and record your own bit of match commentary - not as easy as it sounds!) A cafe is also on-site for your own 'little taste of Manchester United' - with walls covered in Man U memorabilia. Share a burger with Beckham, or a fry up with Ferguson - in your dreams perhaps.
The tour's definitely a lot cheaper than game tickets for sure! The Museum shop of course has all the official kits and Manchester United memorabilia/ephemera, which will no doubt dent a hole in your pocket if you're taking the kids with you. There's free parking though, and family tickets are available which include the stadium tour.
To make your pilgrimage, take A56 Chester Road to Stretford from Manchester city centre, follow the signs and turn right onto Sir Matt Busby Way. The nearest Metro link is Old Trafford, and you just need to walk up Warwick Road passing the cricket ground.
